America’s Aging Population: A Call to Compassion and Action

By 2034, older adults will outnumber children in the U.S.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2034, there will be more adults aged 65+ than children under 18 for the first time in American history. AARP reports that 10,000 Americans turn 65 every day, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a rapid rise in the 65+ workforce.

The Challenges Shaping America's Care Future

A Nation Growing Older

The United States is undergoing a historic demographic shift. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the older population increased by 50.9 million—from 4.9 million (4.7% of the total population) in 1920 to 55.8 million (16.8%) in 2020. This represents a growth rate of nearly 1,000%, almost five times that of the total U.S. population. In 2020, about one in six Americans was aged 65 or older, compared with fewer than one in twenty a century ago (U.S. Census Bureau, 2023). At the same time, 75% of adults aged 50 and older say they want to stay in their homes as they age—valuing the emotional comfort, independence, and stability it brings (AARP, Building for the Future, 2024).

A Workforce in Crisis

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 17% increase in home health and personal care aide employment between 2024 and 2034—one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country. This demand equates to roughly 765,800 new job openings each year, many replacing workers who exit the field (BLS, 2024). However, the caregiving field faces serious retention challenges. In late 2024, caregiver turnover rates reached 79.2%, according to the Activated Insights Benchmarking Report. This is not only a staffing concern—it is a patient care crisis.

Supporting the Frontline of Care

Direct care professionals are the foundation of long-term support in America—yet they remain undervalued. PHI National reports a median wage of $17.36/hour and median annual earnings just under $26,000 in 2023. As a result, 36% live in or near poverty, and 49% rely on public assistance (PHI National, 2024). These roles demand physical endurance, emotional strength, and compassion—qualities we believe deserve investment, respect, and recognition.

Addressing the Loneliness Epidemic

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) reports that over 30% of adults aged 45 and older feel lonely, and one in four adults aged 65 and older are socially isolated—conditions linked to a 50% increased risk of dementia and other serious illnesses (NASEM, 2020). Magnificare’s approach integrates emotional and social well-being into every care plan, because true health extends beyond the physical.
